CONCERT ORCHESTRA is open to students of any level, and no audition is required. Concert Orchestra performs four concerts per year, including the December pops concert featuring music chosen entirely by the students.

 

SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA is an advanced orchestra consisting of students accepted by audition. Symphonic Orchestra performs four or more concerts per year.

 

SMALL ENSEMBLES (new 2015-2016) is the most advanced orchestra class. Students alternate between rehearsals in a small chamber orchestra with wind players and additional work in smaller chamber ensembles of their choice. Students are accepted by audition only.

 

About the Director

A native of Davenport, Iowa, Paul Trapkus is an active music teacher, performer, composer, and advocate. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Violin Performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied string pedagogy with Robert Culver. Paul was a faculty member at the Flint School of Performing Arts and has assisted in teaching middle school and high school orchestras in Michigan and Iowa. Since 2010, he has taught at Silver Creek High School, where he introduced a Fiddle Group, Composition Club, Orchestra Weightlifting Club, a collection of music appreciation videos, and a mentoring program. He serves on the Colorado All State Orchestra Board and has served as a Longmont Youth Symphony Board member, chair for the Combined League Honor Orchestra, and a judge for local and regional orchestras and festivals. His compositions, some of which can be found at imslp.org, have been performed throughout the country and in other countries.  He studied composition with Paul Schoenfield and Daniel Thomas Davis.

In 2014, Paul made the documentary "Carry the Tune" with students Elizabeth Potter and Kelvin DuVal. The film highlights music as an avocation, focusing on why and how to continue making music after high school. The film has been called "the best example of a documentary that showcases the power of music education" (Gary McPherson) and was selected into five film festivals. Paul has presented messages from the film to teachers at the Colorado Music Educators Association Conference and Colorado ASTA Conference.

As a performer, Paul currently plays in the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boulder Chamber Orchestra and played in the Flint Symphony Orchestra for three years. He also played in the Grammy-winning University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra for four years. He has played in master classes with Gregory Fulkerson, Andrés Cárdenes, Curtis Macomber, Jonathan Swartz, Almita Vamos, Jacques Israelievitch, Nachum Erlich, Leopold La Fosse, Annette-Barbara Vogel, Norman Paulu, Diane Nicholeris, and the Arianna, Johannes, and Guarneri String Quartets. He has performed in summer music festivals for over 10 years, including the National Repertory Orchestra, Round Top Festival Institute, Chautauqua Music Festival, Meadowmount School of Music, and Interlochen Music Camp. In 2005, he performed as soloist with the Quad-City Youth Symphony Orchestra and with the Preucil School String Orchestra in a tour of the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Austria.  His primary teachers include Aaron Berofsky, Kathryn Votapek, and Doris Preucil.
